Otero Ranch Brands

 

Original Otero Brand

 

The oldest known Otero brand was included in the lists of the brands of Spanish-Mexican families residing in the Santa Cruz Valley. These families included the Oteros, Pachecos, Amados, Eliases and others.

 

José Otero Brand

This brand was registered to José Tiburcio Otero, a member of the Otero family who remained in Sonora. He was a general much involved in the battle between the Gandara and Pesqueira factions for control of Sonora in the 1850s and 60s. This brand shows how Mexican brands were more elaborate than their American counterparts.

 

Sobino Otero Brand

Sabino Otero’s own brand. As his business grew, Sabino acted as a cattle broker. He formed partnerships with Maish & Driscoll, the colorful Tucson businessmen, and with others, including his brother Teofilo.

 

Teofilo Otero Brand

This brand was in use by Teofilo Otero from the 1880’s until 1920, when he sold it to V.F. Frizzel. Teofilo’s brand had a major advantage over Sabino’s brand.

 

Altered SO Brand

Sabinbo’s SO brand could be altered by cattle thieves to read 800. In the 1920s, 800 was the legitimate brand of W.M. Marteny on his ranch west of Arivaca in the Altar Valley.

 

Menager-Ortero Brand

In 1892 Sabino entered into a cattle selling partnership with Henry Menager, Tucson dry goods store owner, and the two of them registered this brand.
