Work Going Rapidly Ahead On New $73,000 Catholic Church
Work on the new $73,000 Catholic church is rapidly progressing, and by next Thanksgiving, the edifice will be ready for the High Pontifical Mass which will inaugurate the beautiful temple. The walls of the church, being build of red brick with concrete moldings, have already reached above the first tier of windows, or about half the height of the finished building.
Occupying a commanding place almost in the heart of the city, the new church when finished will be one of the landmarks of Nogales. It will be seen from all parts of town, and a long way out before reaching the city on the Patagonia road. The tower of the temple will reach out eighty feet in the air, thus being one of the highest, if not the higest, buildings in the city.
The church will have a seating capacity of 600, but this can be stretched to 1000 when the occasion demands it. one large arch will separate the sanctuary from the congregation. Two more arches will stretch from nave to nave, all arches beautifully molded. The main altar will occupy the center of the sanctuary, while on two niches in the sides will be placed two other altars. To the sides of the main altar will be the priests' and altar boys' sacristies, together with an office.
The driveway to the church will be made to curve down to the Sacred Heart School, using a subway under the flight of stairs from the Arroyo Boulevard to the church entrance. The whold building will be steam heated.
"The new church," said Monsignor Duval to the International, "when finished, will be a real work of art. It will be a church that the people of Nogales will be proud of." The church will be one of the most beautiful in the state of Arizona.Nogales International, Nogales, AZ 15 June 1928 Page 5. Transcribed by Jean Walker 26 Apr 2026.
