Nogales, Arizona 1938-1939
FACTUAL HISTORY
Originally organized on October 7, 1865, as part of the First Arizona Territorial Troops, Campany "A" assisted in the protection of settlers against hostile Indians. Poorly equipped, clothes and paid, this unit was disbanded after little more than a year of service, then reorganized again in 1882.
Disbanded again and reorganized in 1890 as a territorial troop, most of its members were discharged to enlist in the United States Volunteers for the Spanish-American War. The unit reorganized in 1903, reorganized in 1908, and on June 3, 1916, for service on the Mexican Border.
Mustered into Federal service on August 5, 1917, Company "A" went overseas for the World War and served as a replacement organization, being held at a training camp in France charged with the duty of training replacements for front line units. Reorganized following the World War as Troop "A," First Cavalry, Phoenix, on March 25, 1920; redesignated Company "A" 158th Infantry, January 11, 1921; disbanded on June 16, 1927, at Phoenix, and reorganized on June 17, 1927, at Nogales.
For the next two years, the Company armory was a store room or building, but since the erection of the present armory in 1929, the unit has had a large building with necessary conveniences.
The Company went to Fort Huachuca, Arizona, for encampments in 1927, 1928, and 1929, and in the following years to Fort Tuthill near Flagstaff, Arizona. In 1938,it encamped at Fort Huachuca for field maneuvers.
