The sole purpose of the USGenWeb project is to provide as much free access to on-line genealogy related information as possible. If you have any information that would help others in their research, please consider donating it to the USGenWeb project. This web is not in any way affiliated with Santa Cruz County government. If you are interested in volunteering by transcribing, researching or becoming a County Coordinator, please read more about that at our AZGenWeb State Page. I am Jean Walker, County Coordinator for Santa Cruz County, AZGenWeb. I hope you enjoy your visit. Please email me if you have any suggestions or contributions you would like to make.
In 1853, the Gadsden Purchase formed the southeastern corner of Arizona, then Mexico, making it part of the United States. Santa Cruz County was created from Pima County in 1899, and it is the smallest county in Arizona. The county is named for the Santa Cruz River, which means Holy Cross in Spanish. It is located in the southern-most central part of Arizona, sharing borders with Mexico and serving as the gateway to North America. The county seat of Santa Cruz is the city of Nogales, with a population of about 20,387 in 2010. I hope you find the information here helpful in your research of Santa Cruz roots.
