USGenWeb has provided free genealogy resources since 1996 through the work of state and county coordinators, and volunteers. I am Jean Walker, Coordinator for Santa Cruz County, AZGenWeb site. I hope you enjoy your visit. Please email me if you have any questions, suggestions or contributions that you would like to make.
In 1853, the Gadsden Purchase formed the southeastern corner of Arizona, then Mexico, making it part of the United States. Santa Cruz County was created from Pima County in 1899, and it is the smallest county in Arizona. The county is named for the Santa Cruz River, which means Holy Cross in Spanish. It is located in the southern-most central part of Arizona, sharing borders with Mexico and serving as the gateway to North America. The county seat of Santa Cruz is the city of Nogales, with a population of about 20,387 in 2010.
I hope you find the information here helpful in your research of Santa Cruz roots.
